I'm a big fan of video games. I'm also a huge music fan, especially of the electronic variety. Merging the two is one of life's more delicious inventions, like peanut butter & jelly or computers and a musty basement. Unfortunately, it appears that all too many people have not been exposed to this niche genre of music so in order to illuminate and thwart our current update policy, every Tuesday I'll take a short look at one of many fine video game remixes.

This week's remix: Dead Lovers' Consent - Wizards & Warriors (Sweet Plum Aspara mix)

For those that grew up with a NES, you almost surely remember Wizards & Warriors (and the almost cultish following over the line 'Wizard needs food badly') - well, while there are a quite a few quality remixes out there of it, if you can only listen to one, this is should be it. Sweet Plum Aspara is an extremely well conceived, broodish electronic mix of the original. Fantastic great string harmonies that add depth to the original melody, extra-tight programming and an excellent sense of pacing produce a remix with oodles of depth. In fact, this isn't so much a remix as a complete composition of the classical kind, but you should expect nothing less from an artist who names a minimalist remix of PacMan after Philip Glass.

My only qualm with this mix is that it's a bit too quiet - everything sounds a tad too low. But better that than to bear the brunt of an over-modulated track. Pick this one up - if you're looking for something that will make you shake your ass you may feel a bit slighted, but if you want a provocative, intelligent mix that captures and flies far beyond the original, you certainly can't go wrong here.
