I'm a big fan of video games. I'm also a huge music fan, especially of the electronic variety. Merging the two is one of life's more delicious inventions, like peanut butter & jelly or computers and a musty basement. Unfortunately, it appears that all too many people have not been exposed to this niche genre of music so in order to illuminate and thwart our current update policy, every Tuesday I'll take a short look at one of many fine video game remixes.
This week's remix: A Scholar & a Physician - Super Mario Brothers (Dirty Mix)
Who doesn't remember the Super Mario Brothers theme? It's almost a pervasive as the Jeopardy tune. In this mix A Scholar & a Physician take the bones of the original and send it through a blender of questionable electronic taste, then finish it off with doses of static, Parappa samples and whatever other odd bits they had laying around. The end result is a cacaphony of sound that ends up barely resembling the source material and I love it all the more for it. For those that say most video game remixes sound like rehashed, underproduced techno, listen to this track. My one and only complaint is that it's far too short, barely giving me a taste of their capabilities before the final sample exists the speakers. Otherwise, there are plenty of breaks, glitches and kid 606 flavored messiness makes this mix stand out in a wash of mediocre electronic compositions, even outside of the video game remix world.
